Aviation and Government?

So I have to write a 15 minute speech on any topic that has to do with aviation and government. It can really be about anything as long as it keeps those two within the topic, but I've drawn a blank and just cannot think of anything interesting enough to talk about for 15 minutes concerning aviation and government, lol. Any help would be REALLY appreciated! thanks!

  1. Ability of the FAA to serve two masters; promote safety and the industry -- which are sometimes mutual exclusive?

  2. OMG!  Have I got a topic for you!

The Federal Aviation Administration is risking the lives of the traveling American public by imposing work rules on the air traffic controller workforce, pushing out the experienced controllers eligible to retire, only to replace them with inexperienced newbies who are getting paid subsistence wages.

ATC facilities across the country are running short staffed and operational errors (near mid-air collisions) are rising.  The FAA is trying to hide the errors to make it appear that everything is okay.  Check out tomorrow's blog for some truly frightening insight into their latest method of covering up the disaster that the FAA has become.

The FAA, backed by the Bush administration, has been pushing a 'run it like a business' agenda for several years.  The ultimate goal may be to contract out ATC services to the lowest bidder.

  3. How about the history of the pilot license?

  4. I took a whole course on the airline deregulation and dissolution of the CAB... There's a whole textbook on the topic.  It's expensive, but see if the library can get a copy for you.  Here's the Amazon tag for the book...

Tons of stuff, but the book itself is too long for 15 minutes, you would have to narrow it down some.  Good topic with plenty of government involvement.

    Good luck.

  5. Go to this website and it will tell you a brief synopsis of what the Army has to offer. All these jobs can transfer over into the civilian sector and they fall under both topics. If you want to know more i can expand on the 15P MOS being that i have been doing it for 5 years.

  6. If I had to do it, I'd go on how different departments use aviation. Look into it, you may be surprised at how much is out there. Nearly every department operates aircraft to accomplish some goal. Just a few examples would be us customs flies citations with sophisticated observation equipment. Forest service flies helicopters and airplanes for many different things, mostly observation (they contract out fire fighting). The CIA originally flew the sr-71 (called the a-12 when they used it). Department of wild life uses small aircraft to learn about different wild animals.

Basically, if you pick any department of the government, and think of a way they could use an aircraft to do their job, they have already done it.
