I have a 2nd class medical but want to get a 1st the only thing is I am starting my ppl training I haven't got an IFR liscense and I am not a flight instructor I am (hopefully) just a few month's from getting my private pilot's liscence. My question is when you got your ppl did you get a 1st 2nd or 3rd medical card? or is it even possible to get a 1st class with just a ppl without an ifr liscense?

  1. Yes you can get a first class medical. This is generally a good practice when obtaining your first medical, so that a medical condition that could prevent you from flying commercially ( If that is your goal ) may be detected early.

Of course a first class is required for commercial passenger operations by the Pilot in command and is only valid for six months.

Should you decide to obtain a first class anyway it will remain valid as a third class for two years after the issue date.

    Good luck!

  2. If you come upto the standards, you can get a 1st Class Medical Rating. A licence or a rating is irrelevant to your obtaining a medical certificate.

  3. The flight certifications and medical certifications are completely separate.  You can secure any of the medical certificates you want at any time--just see your medical examiner.

Most people hold off on the higher level medicals until they need them, because they cost more.

  4. You can get any class medical you want.  All you have to do is pass the exam.

If you have a First Class Medical, and you have a Private Pilot Certificate (It's not a license), then it's as if you have a Third Class Medical.  If you had a Commercial Certificate that requires a Second Class, you could have a Second or a First Class Medical.

    Hope that makes sense.
