Question:

Avid Harry Potter-hater LOTR fans, are you twilight or HP?

So I thought it was funny because I've been on the Harry Potter wagon for about the last seven years and I remember that up until about four years ago there was a vicious clash of the fandoms:

Lord of the Rings v. Harry Potter.

Now it's starting all over again with:

twilight v. Harry Potter.

I was just curious what side the LOTRs choose in this one.

Hey is anyone neutral like me (I get thumbs down every time I claim neutrality. I'm going to read LOTR this year, I never have.

  1. Well, I'm a LoTR fan, but I count as a DIE HARD HP fan.

Now, of course it's Harry Potter, Twilight isn't even literature.

  2. yeah i am like neautral too

like i like twilight but i dont mind about harry potter either

  3. Lord of the Rings is the best of the three. That's a fact. It's a classic, and has been popular for longer than Harry Potter and Twilight put together.

As a LOTR fan, I have to say that I like Harry Potter a lot more than Twilight. Harry Potter has a ton of adventure in it, and it's easy to love.

Twilight, on the other hand, just isn't written very well. Plus Stephenie Meyer is in serious need of a thesaurus. I can't count the times she said "crooked smile", "masochistic", or "chagrin".

I think most (if not all) LOTR fans like Harry Potter better than Twilight. Either that or they are (like you) neutral.

  4. For anyone who can read and appreciate The Downfall of the Lord of the Rings and the Return of the King, that's a non-question, surely?

Tolkien was an expert in language, history and myth.  It shows in the richness of the settings.  His world is much bigger than is needed for  the plot,  the characters moving through a landscape not simply carved to suit the parameters of their story.

    This is rare stuff.

But while I can't compare Harry Potter to that, particularly in the later books where skills, events and artefacts tend to appear as required, Harry Potter stands head and shoulders above Twilight.

Twilight's sheer repetition of vocabulary, alone, would provide sufficient reason, but that's hardly the only reason.

  6. Harry Potter of course

  7. Harry Potter wins that contest. Twilight is a badly written Mary Sue fanfiction. It doesn't even count as literature and many people will agree.

Keep in ming the LOTR book is very slow but an excellent read. Nothing at all like the movies and you may find yourself skipping over entire sections.
