Aviva Premiership’s new members Worcester Warriors to host Pumas in pre-season match: Rugby
Worcester Warriors, who were recently promoted to the 2011/12 Aviva Premiership, have boosted their pre-season preparations as they have confirmed that they will play against the Argentinean national Rugby Union team, Pumas, in August, 2011.
Officials at the club have confirmed the news of their scheduled match against the Pumas in a statement released on their website on Monday, July 4. This is probably Warriors biggest game in club history as they host the rugby world’s eighth best international
outfit.
Worcester Warriors General Manager, Charlie Little, has expressed his delight on securing a game against the international team. Earlier, Warriors had already fixed an outing against the 2011 Super Rugby debutant Melbourne Rebels.
Commenting on the game against the Pumas, Little said, “We were made aware last week that Argentina would be in the country and there was interest in an extra game.”
Little further added, “This fixture will put Warriors on the rugby map and is a high profile game for us as Argentina bring their best players. To secure games with both a Super 15 team and international side, currently ranked eighth in the world, is very
exciting. This will be the best pre-season the club has ever had and the ideal preparation for our return to the Aviva Premiership.”
Little has also praised the Warriors head coach, Richard Hill, for his determination, courage and support in playing against the international team. He added, “Richard Hill and I acted quickly to secure the fixture (with Pumas) as Richard felt we needed
another high-quality game for the whole squad.”
Warriors will play four games before the start of the 2011/12 Premiership season. Besides the Rebels and Pumas, Warriors will also play against the Rugby Football Union (RFU) championships two strongest teams.
Warriors will host Argentina at Sixways Stadium, Worcester, on August 23. Little further confirmed that the match between the Warriors and Stourbridge RFC has already been called off because Stourbridge RFC was reluctant to play their players a week before
the start of the regular season.
Little further expressed hope, the games would help the Warriors’ players learn a thing or two that would help them deliver a good performance during the Premiership season.
