Question:

Avocado Question?

So, I bought an avocado today. I've never had one before. I have a few questions. It's very dark green in color and I would say, probably soft enough. Is it ready to eat? Also, do you have to wash it first, and can you eat the skin?

  1. If your talking about the Haas avocado - then dark green is good.  Other types of avocado's - that wouldn't be good.

No need to wash - can rinse if you like (I do because you never know who handled it before you) - cut totally around - top to bottom.  You then have two half's.  Remove the pit - or leave it in the one half if you not going to be eating it right away (helps to keep it from turning brown) and wrap it in up or put it in a sealed container (some also use lemon juice to keep it from turning brown).

You don't eat the skin - just the inside portion.  Great for you - full of good 'fats' that a body needs which actually will help to lower cholesterol.

You can make dip out of it - slice it up and put it on something - or eat it right out of the skin with a spoon.

  2. dont eat the skin! and if it squishes kindof when you poke it then its ready!

  4. Very dark green is good.  Soft is good.  Cut it through to the seed and rotate the avocado until you have divided completely in two.  Pull it apart, remove the seed and scoop out of the "shell" with a spoon.  Enjoy   : ~)

  5. You remove the skin and take out the pit.  Slice it for sandwiches or make guacamole.

  6. It is ready to eat.  After halving the avocado, the easiest way to remove the pit is to whack it with a chef's knife, then twist.  Scoop the flesh out with a large spoon.

Quick serving idea:  Add a couple of spoonfuls of salsa and some salt, mash with a potato masher, and serve with saltines or tortilla chips

  7. Dark color is perfect--the avocado is ripe. Just push the skin with your index finger--there should be some "give" to it.

Open the avocado by cutting length wise. Remove the pit with a spoon or chef's cleaver. Throw it away. Do not eat the skin. Be sure to squirt lemon juice on the avocado to r****d the oxidation process--brown avocados are disgusting.

  8. Dont eat the skin.  Take a sharp small knife and cut down to the 'very large hard pit' in the middle.  Turn the fruit until you have made a perfect circular cut all the way around it.  With both hands grip the fruit, twist each hand in opposite directions and it should "pop" apart.  Spoon out the seed and eat it anyway you decide to.
