Question:

Avocado seed sprouts in what water?

I understand the basics of sprouting an avocado seed, using the water and tooth-pick-suspension method, but my main question is: what water should I use? Bottled? Distilled? Tap? Dechlorinated Tap? Purified? and also I would like any helpful tips about sprouting a seed.

  1. Just good old tap water will work fine.

  2. Regular tap water will work fine.

  3. Any water is good but rain water collected from a clean source is best.  nature made it.

There is one trick that I was told. . . as soon as the pit is out of the avocado, let it dry for a few days.

    THEN do the following:

    a)  gently peel the brown skin off

    b)  cut one quarter inch off the very top of the pit. (This is the pointy-er end of the seed)  There is a crack in the seed where the sprout will squeeze out, and cutting the top gives that sprout an easier time of it.  Do not cut the bottom end (the thicker bit)

    c)  Stick three toothpicks about half way up the seed (look online for pictures of this)

    d) place the seed in any kind of water in a jar where the bottom of the pit is in water and the tooth picks suspend it.

    e) change the water ever couple of weeks, but top it up in the between times.

    f) in about three months there will be seed and leaves.

    g)  Plant outdoors in the Spring and follow the rules for seedling tree planting.  (go to google for that)

I have one planted in the yard that I sprouted about 4 years ago and the tree is about 5 foot tall.  YAY.
