With the next Summer Olympics two years away, the preparation for the Games is in full swing in London, United Kingdom. The Games will be held from 27th July to 12 august, 2012. London has already hosted the Modern Olympic Games in 1908 and 1948. Thus, London will become the first city to host the Modern Olympic Games for third time. On 26th September 2008, the Olympic flag was raised to celebrate the initiation of third cultural Olympiad in London. The Olympic Flag will fly till the Opening Ceremony in 2012.The London Olympic stadium is the Third largest Stadium in England and it has a capacity of 80,000 people. Wenlock and Mandeville are the official Mascots of London Olympics 2010. Both Mascots are made of steel. Wenlock is the mascot for Olympics and Mandeville is the mascot for Paralympics. The two mascots are based on a story written by children’s author Michael Morpurgo. Both of them have a special place in history. Much Wenlock, is a village where Olympics Games were held in 1850 and stoke Mandeville Hospital is a hospital for paralyzed patients. Wenlock and Mandeville, did not become a part of any controversy and were appreciated a lot by the people. Organizers expect that both of these mascots will generate great revenue and make their place among the most fondly remembered mascots.
The London logo for 2012 was presented on 4th of June 2007. This Logo will be used for both Olympics and Paralympics Games. Olympic rings embedded within the zero can be seen in the Logo. The basic colours of the Logo are blue, magenta, orange and green. The aim of the Logo is to reach young people. Despite of the controversies against it, people liked the pleasant looking Logo.
The authorities are making strong efforts to create right Venues and infrastructures. All events are planned to be conducted in a number of new Venues, along with the existing and Historic facilities. The three major Venues, the Olympic zone, the River zone and the Central zone are within Greater London. Other venues include Aquatics venue, basketball arena, earl’s court, hockey centre etc. A complete makeover is being done to London for the success of the Olympics events.
Here another question arises; is London ready to cope with this huge event and how this congested city would be able to deal with the influx of millions of people during Olympics? Major redesigns are proposed and the authorities are trying to enhance the bus and underground transportation system of the city to manage millions of people during events. Security will not be an issue. The city police are efficient enough to ensure the safety of the athletes. London is already a green city, so the 2012 Olympics are expected to the most greenest ever. 4,000 trees are expected to be planted in London and other Olympic Venues. Therefore, there is less issue regarding pollution. Triathlon and cycling have the potential of disaster because both of them will take place on the roads of London. The authorities are trying to reschedule the events and take them to weekends to avoid any major issue.
The selected 70,000 volunteers from all over the world will play a major role in ensuring that the Summer Olympics 2012 run smoothly and successfully. Thus, we can expectantly say about the whole event will go evenly and it will turn out to be an excellent Olympics with a number of amazing and entertaining competitions among best athletes of the world.
