Awesome Bet and Thirtyfirststreet to headline the Zia Derby at Zia Park
The two 3-year-old colts Thirtyfirststreet and Awesome Bet have been consistently coming in and out of races this season. The former has raced 8 times this year and the latter has also started 8 times this year. The duo will headline the $150,000 Zia Derby at Zia Park on 3 December, 2011 which will mark their 9th start of the season.
Comparatively, Awesome Bet out of those eight starts this season dedicated his first 3 starts to make an impact in his maiden special weight races which he has been trying to break since October 2010.
He finally managed to break his maiden in his sixth attempt this year at Fair Grounds race course over a distance of 1 mile and 70 yards on 11 March, 2011.
After breaking his maiden, Awesome Bet has somewhat improved in regards to winning races and finishing on the money. With a couple of missed opportunities, Awesome Bet has done just fine.
Trained by Steven Asmussen for owner Mike McCarty, Awesome Bet, is coming off a second place finish in the Grade 2 Super Derby to the Bob Baffert trained runner Prayer for Relief at Louisiana Downs on 10 September, 2011 at about 1 1/8 miles.
The Kentucky bred son of Awesome Again, out of mare Ellie’s Moment by Kris S, Awesome Bet hunted down the caste in Barbaro Stakes at about 1 1/16 miles at Del Mar on 9 July, 2011.
He tracked down leaders in the beginning as he comfortably stalked the field in the back. Coming on top of the lane, Awesome Bet jumped fast and started to inch away towards the wire to win the race over J W Blue and Meistersinger with the winning time of 1 minute and 40.37 seconds.
The California bred son of Good Journey, out of Avian by Sky Classic, Thirtyfirststreet in stark complexion with Awesome Bet has been a little off in this season. Coming off a 10th place finish in the Grade 2 Oak Tree Derby is not good enough.
Though the colt managed to land the Lone Star Derby in May, but hasn’t shown much promise after that.
