Awesome Feather extended her perfect winning streak in the Nasty Storm Stakes
Despite an eight month layoff, 4-year-old Chad C. Brown trained filly, Awesome Feather, didn’t forget to keep her perfect streak going, and after making her comeback in the $85,000 Nasty Storm Stakes, she is a perfect 10 now.
Stronach Stables’ Awesome Feather has only raced four times in 2 years, and the reason behind her lightly raced schedule is that the filly has been battling with tendon issues.
However, in the Nasty Storm Stakes, Awesome Feather put on a dazzling performance. The Awesome of Course filly turned in a sparkling performance against four other lesser fillies and mares by posting a startling 11 ¼ lengths victory, as she covered the 1 mile race in 1 minute and 33.47 seconds at Belmont Park on 20 September, 2012.
Nasty Storm was Awesome Feather’s second start of the season, and prior to her recent victory, she raced back on 28 January, 2012, in the Sunshine Millions Distaff at Gulfstream Park for trainer Chad Brown.
"Coming into this race, we felt at the barn that she was carrying more weight and her coat was better than we've ever seen it," Brown remarked. "Her other three wins, she was nice and sound, but we never had her looking weight-wise and coat-wise the way we wanted. This race, coming in, was the best she ever looked to me. We're just fortunate the race went here, that they had a race for us at Belmont, and it should be a good steppingstone to the Ladies' Classic if she comes out of the race in good shape."
Sent as the 1 to 5 favourite, Awesome Feather swiftly broke, and settled in third, tracking the pace setter, Daddy’s Honor.
The opening quarter-mile was covered in 22.63 seconds, and half-mile in 44.96 seconds, but by the 6-furlong mark, Awesome Feather had made her move and reached the pole in 1 minute and 8.60 seconds.
Entering the stretch, Awesome Feather was well and true on her way to her 10th straight victory, and with each stride she increased the margin on her rivals under jockey Jeffrey Sanchez.
Out of Gone West mare Precious Feather, Awesome Feather has set up a perfect bid at the Grade 1, $2 million Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic at Santa Anita Park on 2 November, 2012.
