Awesome Feather to extend her unbeaten record to 8 in the Gazelle Stakes at Aqueduct
The 3-year-old unbeaten filly, Awesome Feather, made her last start back in October and that was it for the 2010 champion filly in this season, but now she aims a little higher at the back end of the season including ten sophomore fillies to take the field at Aqueduct for the Grade 1, $250,000 Gazelle to be run at 1 1/8 miles.
The Gazelle will also be the last graded stakes of the year to be run at the Aqueduct race track. Trained by Chad C. Brown for Stronach Stables, Awesome Feather despite coming off a 11 month layoff made her comeback to the races in winning style.
The Florida bred daughter of Awesome of Course, out of mare Precious Feather by Gone West, Awesome Feather bagged the Le Slew Stakes this season at Belmont Park on dirt.
Under jockey Jeffrey Sanchez, Awesome Feather took on 3-year-old fillies for the first time in a seven furlong sprint and kept her flawless record intact to stretch it to seven wins in as many starts.
“She’s held up really well and she hasn’t had a bad day of training,” said trainer Chad Brown. “Not one day. I’m excited to see her run around two turns at Aqueduct and see what she can do in a Grade 1.”
Stronach Stables own the filly and they have given the conditioning rights to Chad Brown. The owners acquired the filly for $2.3 million at an auction following her Breeders’ Cup victory.
“It would be a nice reward for the Stronachs, they have been patient with this filly and gave me a lot of leeway with her. I just make sure she is 100 percent every day when we go out there, and she has been. It would be nice to reward them for their patience. She’s a really gutsy horse – she just has a great attitude about her.”
Awesome Feather in the Grade 1 Gazelle will face the likes of Savvy Supreme who is coming off a win in the Grade 3 Monmouth Oaks, Miss Valentine, coming off a fourth place finish in the Real Prize Stakes.
