Awesome Feather to skip Breeders’ Cup and think about the Grade Gazelle at Aqueduct
The undefeated Stronach Stables owned 3-year-old filly Awesome Gem’s Breeders’ Cup plans are still on the fence, though Chad Brown hasn’t completely the Breeders’ Cup possibility but he is more inclined towards running his unbeaten filly in the Grade 3 Gazelle
at Aqueduct on 26 November, 2011.
Awesome Feather, who has appeared in seven starts for her connections and gone on to win all seven on the trot, might skip the Breeders’ Cup, the reason being that she has only raced once this year in an ungraded stakes at 7 furlongs against fillies her
own age.
Though, it was a good performance in the La Slew, but to feature in a Breeders’ Cup race, a runner has to come off a victory against known contenders. Her connections would be hoping to let the Breeders’ Cup pass this year and develop her much stronger at
the age of 4 to compete in the test of champions next year.
After a lengthy layoff, the daughter of Awesome Of Course, out of Precious Feather by Gone West, Awesome Feather won a seven furlong long overnight stakes at Belmont Park on 5 October, 2011.
The filly under J Sanchez destroyed her competition in the La Slew Stakes on dirt, and in the process downed Sentimental Lass and Flying Train in the final few yards to cover the seven furlong distance in 1 minute and 22.76 seconds.
Prior to that, Awesome Feather broke her Grade 1 stakes duck when she appeared in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs on 5 November, 2010
Under her regular jockey J Sanchez, who has ridden Awesome Feather in all of her seven starts, took up the challenge and ran down her opponents in the stretch at about 1 1/16 miles on dirt.
Defeated R Heat Lightening and Delightful Mary in the process, the fillies filled the second and the third spot, respectively, while Awesome feather completed the 1 1/16 miles distance in 1 minute and 45.13 seconds.
On 19 October Awesome Feather turned in four furlongs in 49.82 seconds over the Belmont Park’s main track.
