Awesome Feather working her way back to return to the races after a perfect award winning 2010 season
The descendant of Secretariat, Awesome Feather, was named the last year’s champion 2-year-old filly, has not raced since she completed a perfect 6 for 6 campaign last year mainly because of a tendon injury.
Awesome Feather had a fantastic 2010 season, including the 2 ½ length victory in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on 5 November, 2010, at Churchill Downs.
Although, Awesome Feather “now” 3-years-old breezed five furlongs over at Belmont Park’s main track on the morning of 12 September, 2011, and she covered the distance in 1 minute and 0.98 seconds.
This was the juvenile filly’s third work after, before that her first workout was at Belmont Park where she breezed three furlong on dirt on 24 May, 2011 with a time of 36.78 seconds with a breezing rank of 2/3.
Then she moved from 3 furlongs to 5 furlongs, a major news in her road to recovery, as she covered the distance at Belmont Park in 1 minute and 1.14 seconds, and it was her fourth morning move since she got sidelined by a tendon injury.
Trained Chad Brown said after the 12 September workout, that they are taking to week by week and assessing the situation after each workout she turns in, so far she has been nice and smooth and well within herself.
Since breaking her maiden in her first attempt, Awesome Feather hasn’t looked back since then, taking the momentum in every race she races and winning it.
The daughter of Awesome Of course, out of Precious Feather by Gone West, Awesome Feather started her first four races over distances ranging from 4 ½ furlongs to 7 furlongs, steam rolling whatever came in her way.
Then she was elevated to 1 1/16 miles, and she did not disappoint in the Florida Stallion My Dear Girl at Calder race course on 16 October, 2010, but the race which won her the champion juvenile filly of the year was the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies over
at 1 1/16 miles.
She won it in emphatic style and earned herself an Eclipse Award. Things are looking up for the filly, and if everything goes well, eventually she will be ready to make her much awaited return to the races in a month’s time.
