Axies and Allies question?

Can someone please explain a submarine attack. Do they only fire in open fire? Can they submerge after their open fire, or do the defending units have a chance to fight back before they submerge?

Every sub fires in the opening fire step.    Loses are removed before the return fire.   They submerge at the end so, if you have 2 subs vs 2 battleships and the subs get 1 opening hit, both battleships would return fire.  Subs could then retreat.  (vs other ships, they retreat 1 space  vs planes they submerge in the same space)

Part II - The plane must land in a safe place after the combat phase ends. In effect, the plane has a movement range of 1 to reach a friendly land space, island, or aircraft carrier during the attacker's turn.
