Can someone please explain the attacking of subs and the defending of them. I know they can fire in open fie, but can they also attack in the normal combat? Also please explain what happens exactly if there is and enemy destroyer in the sea zone. Please be very specific to the steps.

  1. yes case defance

  2. When one power attacks the sea zone of another power, all of the submarines in the attacking fleet attack first. The attacker rolls one die for each submarine. The defender removes one of his naval units for each hit rolled, and puts them back into his unit pool. The units that were hit by submarines do not go to the casualties area and cannot roll an attack. Only naval units may be hit by submarines. If there are no defending naval units, there is no need for the attacking subs to roll. They cannot hit air units.

After the attacking subs have rolled, the attacker rolls dice for each of the other attacking units, and the rest of the attack round proceeds as normal. The defending units that were hit by units other than the submarines may counterattack.

If one or more destroyers is/are in the defending fleet, attacking subs do not get to roll first as described above. They roll with the rest of their fleet, and naval units that are hit by subs in this case may counterattack.

If one or more destroyers is/are in an attacking fleet, and any subs are in the defending fleet, the subs may not use their special ability to escape combat. They must stay and fight until the attacker retreats, the attacker's fleet is eliminated, or the subs are destroyed. I'm not sure about this, but I believe defending subs do not get a first strike attack whether a destroyer is in the attacking fleet or not. - LJS
