  1. All axis and allies games come with a battle board.  Depending on whether you are the attacker or the defender, each unit you have participating in a battle gets a number assigned to them.  For example, an attacking infantry unit gets a 1, but a defending infantry unit gets a 2.  Different units have different numbers, so you'll have to refer to the rules.  When you roll the dice, you roll once for each unit, and if your roll is lower or equal to the number assigned to that unit, it scores a hit, and the opponent removes one unit of his or her choice.  So basically, unlike Risk, the lower your roll, the better.  Obviously, different units have different values and different jobs.  Infantry are mainly there for defense and to soak up hits during attacks.  Armor units provide the most firepower, while air units play support but can't actually capture provinces.  That's just the basic combat rules.  For more advanced rules, the rulebook is your best bet so try reading that.  It's a great game and you'll have loads of fun playing it.

  2. Axis and Allies combat is essentially this. Each unit that you have in the battle has a rating from 1 to 6. For each unit you roll a die and hope to get equal or lower than the rating eg fighters when defending have a rating of 4. So you roll a die per fighter and for each 4 or less you score a hit. Typically, players roll in batches eg so you roll all your 'ones' first, then 'two' etc.

As you have different unit types with different combat and ratings and different build cost, part of the strategy of playing is knowing what to build and when.
