Aya Terakawa nabs Women’s 50m back-stroke crown: Mare Nostrum, Canet 2011
After the impressive performance of Ryosuke Irie in the Men’s 200m back-stroke final, another Japanese swimmer, Aya Terakawa came out strongly and won the gold medal in the Women’s 50m back-stroke meet with a record time of 28.09 seconds at the 2011 Mare
Nostrum Championships, held in Canet, France, on June 9, 2011.
Earlier, Terakawa set a record in the respective event with a fastest time of 27.79 seconds in April, 2011. After the execution of the 50m back-stroke meet, the Japanese swimmer was very thrilled and fascinated with her performance.
She said that she swam out of the box with her natural speed and mental toughness, which helped her immensely to clinch a neck-to-neck battle against two other challenging swimmers, Grace and Mercedes Peris, in the respective race.
Grace Loh and Mercedes Peris Minguet tied in the Women’s 50m back-stroke for the second spot, as both the swimmers ended their swims with a sterling time of 28.51 seconds.
The Japanese swimmer further admitted that conditions really suited her to be the top seed in the 50m back-stroke final.
Aya Terakawa is one of the most dedicated swimmers of Japan, who has absolute expertise in the back-stroke and medley styles of swimming.
The most significant aspect about Terakawa’s professional swimming career is that she has captured many unique titles in championships such as the Asian Games, National Games and Pan Pacific Championships.
Terakawa snared two silver tiles in the Women’s 50m back-stroke and 100m back-stroke swimming events, during the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine. She captured the bronze title in the Women’s 4x100 medley final in the respective championship. She
was also placed second in the Women’s 200m back-stroke event in the 2002 Pan Pacific championships, in Yokohama.
Terakawa is yet to win a gold medal in the Olympic Games. The Japanese swimmer is preparing hard at her national swimming training centre, for the upcoming 2011 FINA World Championships in China, this July. Her goal now is to win golden crowns in both, the
World Championships and London Olympic Games, 2012.
