France 20 – Nigeria 0
On day two of the tournament, France was bound to face the Nigerian team in a Group-C preliminary round game. However, team Nigeria failed to make it to the tournament due to poor travel arrangements by their basketball federation. Therefore, the game was forfeited and France earned 20 points as per FIBA rules.
Italy 70 – China 64
Debora Carangelo erupted with a game-high 19 points as Italy earned a 70-64 win over China. Carangelo led all scorers on the night and also made four steals and clutched three rebounds during her 24 minutes stay on the court. She hit six out of her 10 field goals attempts including 3-of-6 from the long range. She was also a perfect four on four from the free throw.
Giulia Maffenini also came up with 17 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Italian squad.
From China, Mengran Sun remained the top contributor. She scored 18 points, clutched nine rebounds, distributed two assists and made one steal in the game. Sun finished the game on an eight of 14 shooting from the field. Dong Yu was the second best scorer for the Chinese team with 13 points and five rebounds.
USA 76 – Russia 53
Diamond Deshields marshalled USA to a 76-53 win over Russia. Deshields racked up 16 points, seized four rebounds and catered for one assist during her 19 minutes stay on court. She hit 6-of-12 from the floor on the night. Breanna Stewart also chipped in 14 points along with three rebounds for USA.
Kseniya Andreeva was the leading scorer for Russia. She guided the way with 15 points, three rebounds and one steal. During her 22 minutes of action, Kseniya hit three 3-pointers and was a 100 percent from the free throw area. Ekaterina Kubynina also scored 12 points together with four rebounds and two steals for Russia.
Japan 90 – Argentina 71
Aya Watanabe injected life in a numb Japanese unit with her a double-double, as Japan defeated Argentina by 90-71. Watanabe punched 33 points and 11 rebounds for the Japanese squad. Her 35 minutes stint also included three assists and three steals.
Aya shot 57.9 percent from the floor, 62.5 percent from beyond the arc and 85.7 percent from the free throw line. Japan also got a decent contribution from Sanae Motokawa, who tallied 18 points and snatched six rebounds for her side.
For Argentina, Natasha Spiatta was the leading contributor with 12 points, two rebounds and three assists. She played for 23 minutes and shot 55.6 percent of her field goals. Diana Cabrera had 11 points and 11 rebounds while Melisa Gretter added 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists for Argentineans.
