Liverpool’s managing director Ian Ayre lashed out at Wigan Athletic Chairman Dave Whelan for his improper handling of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roberto-c31294 Martinez’s talks with the Reds, and revealed that at times his statements were misleading.
Earlier, Liverpool had held meetings with the 38-year old Spaniard after former manager Kenny Dalglish was sacked by the club owners as a result of the Reds toilsome in the previous season.
Martinez reportedly met the owners of the Fenway Sports Group in Boston last week to discuss the terms of his appointment. However, Liverpool eventually handed over the management job to Brendan Rodgers after the Wigan boss refused to work under the proposed
new director system at Anfield.
Even though Ayre admitted that Martinez had displayed excellent conduct and professionalism during his meetings with the members of the club’s top hierarchy, he was critical of the manner in which the Wigan chairman Whelan had handled the whole incident
and lashed out at him for passing on too much information to the media.
While talking to reporters, he said: “It is disappointing, then, that Dave Whelan felt the need to run the kind of sideshow he conducted via Sky Sports News and various other media outlets.”
He went on to taunt the Wigan supremo by terming him even a bigger ‘comedian’ than the famous wisecracker John Bishop because of the way he interacted with the media.
During the last couple of weeks, Martinez was considered to be in pole position to assume the managerial role at Anfield, coming under the Reds surveillance after making a notable impact in the Premier League during the closing stages of the last term.
Despite the fact that he was tipped to become the new manager at Liverpool by people from across the board, Ayre revealed that at one stage Whelan let out false news in the media that the Reds have made an offer to the Latics boss.
He continued, “For his [http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Martinez-c24468’s] chairman to make suggestions like he has, and suggestions that just aren't true, well it is disappointing to say the least.”
However, the managing director at Anfield was full of praise for the Spaniard for his professional behaviour throughout the course of his talks with the Merseyside club and believed that he possessed a wonderful personality.
He went on to concede that even though the Reds spoke to multiple candidates for the management http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 in the last two weeks, they had only offered the post to Rodgers.
He added, “We can say with absolute certainty that the only person who was made any offer by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 Football Club is Brendan Rodgers.”
