Ayrton Senna documentary brings out emotional side of Ron Dennis
McLaren’s former boss, Ron Dennis, has stated that the new acclaimed feature-documentary about his former driver, the late Ayrton Senna, is quite emotional and some of the imagery of the documentary even brought him to tears.
“Yes, at certain points I cried. Some of the images touched me deeply. We had a very close relationship, only fighting about contracts”, Ron stated when asked about the new documentary about Senna.
Ayrton Senna is by far one of the greatest drivers in the world of Formula 1. The Brazilian driver became a part of the sport in 1984 with Team Toleman and took three impressive podium positions before joining Team Lotus the following year.
Senna then stayed at Lotus for 3 years before joining McLaren where his championship tally began.
Ayrton won the Formula 1 world championship three times with McLaren, which was led by Ron Dennis most of the time. His most famous rivalry was against his own teammate, Alain Prost, as both of the drivers drove alongside each other for two years.
The McLaren team won titles for two years consecutively during this period and fortunately, Senna secured the drivers’ title in 1988, which was their first year together.
The documentary focused on Senna’s rivalry with Alain Prost mostly as it is considered the most intense and fierce rivalry in the history of the sport to date.
“If you try to win with only one driver, then the ability of the team to win suffers. What's clear is that despite the dispute, we won 15 of the 16 races in 1988”, said Ron.
Moving on, Senna secured three titles with McLaren before departing as he decided to join Williams. Unfortunately, he was able to race for just 3 races as he passed away as a result of an accident at the San Marino Grand Prix. It was one of the most horrific
incidents in the sport’s history.
“Martin Whitmarsh has a much easier time with the drivers than I did in my time”, Dennis commented.
Dennis had a strong relationship with drivers and added that he had similar relations with Mika Hakkinen, the two-time Formula 1 championship winner, and, Lewis Hamilton, who secured the 2008 Formula 1 championship.
