Ayumi Morita ousts Shuai Zhang in straight sets at the 2011 BMW Malaysian Open
Japanese tennis pro Ayumi Morita defeated Shuai Zhang of China in straight sets 6-0, 6-4, winning their second round match at the 2011 BMW Malaysian Open. Morita, who is seeded sixth at the Women’s Tennis Association [WTA] event, defeated her opponent
in a little over one hour and nine minutes.
Morita stayed on top throughout the first set of the match, although she did not score any aces. To make up for this, the Japanese player did not commit any faults. In contrast, Zhang seemed flustered and committed two double faults and scored no aces.
The Chinese player could only defend four of seven break points, and could not challenge her opponent to any. Morita won an impressive 69 percent of the total points, winning the match without giving Zhang the opportunity to take a single game. The
scoreline for the first set was 6-0, giving the sixth seed a bagel victory over her opponent.
In the second set, Zhang seemed to recover from her abysmal performance in the first set. The Chinese player challenged World Number 57 Ayumi Morita to one break point, managing to convert the opportunity successfully. Morita though did not permit
Zhang to overtake her at any point during the match; she broke her opponent twice, and did not commit any double faults once again.
However, Zhang helped her cause by making several unforced errors. In the end, Ayumi Morita took the second set with 55 percent of a total of 60 points. The final score-line for the second round match was 6-0, 6-4.
Morita has been part of the WTA Tour circuit since 2005, and is currently 20 years old. The young player has been making her mark on the ranking charts since she turned professional, and her aggressive right-handed game has attracted attention from
many sources. However, she is yet to win a WTA career title.
Ayumi Morita will face either Australian wild card and fourth seed Jarmila Groth, or main-draw participant and compatriot Misaki Doi in the next round.
