Azahara Munoz dents position in second round of LPGA Hana Bank Championship 2012
Spanish Azahara Munoz got off to a solid start at the LPGA Hana Bank Championship 2012 as she fired a 66 to tie for the third position, but she could not maintain her momentum on Saturday
and dented her position with a par-72.
Munoz currently stands tied for the 6th position on the leaderboard, but making a good start in a tournament featuring big names gave her plenty of confidence and she still thinks
she can get back into contention in the final round.
The first round, at Ocean Course, Incheon, South Korea, went without bogeys, but the Spanish star swung into action every time she saw an opportunity on the putting green, reeling off a string
of birdies.
Munoz sank six birdies—something enough to put her in a comfortable position on the leaderboard.
On the back nine, her performance grabbed the spectators’ attention after she holed three straight birdies on the 11th, 12th and par-5 13th.
Commentators said that Munoz was good overall, but her short game caused her to lose some score, although it helped her avoid bogeys on some of the hardest holes.
“I hit everything super close. On 11 I hit it to six feet; on 12, seven feet; on 13, five feet; on 16, eight feet; and on 17, four feet,” Munoz said while speaking to the media at the end
of the round on Friday.
No matter how confident Munoz might have been throughout the day, her putting lacked precision on some of the easy holes. She said that she focused hard on the short game, but still, she missed
plenty of good chances.
“I miss ‑‑ I missed a short one on 14. I missed a four‑footer here, five‑footer, and then on ‑‑ no, I mean, they weren't that close. I guess on 4 it was like a 10‑footer, didn't make it;
on 5, the same thing; on 7, probably the same thing, and it lipped out. It wasn't as close as on the back”.
Despite getting off to a decent start, Munoz seemed to put a damper on her confidence when she fumbled in the second round. Having carded three bogeys and three birdies, she let her nearest
rivals drag her down to a much lower position.
Although she is still inside the top 10, the final round can be nerve-racking for the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) phenom, if she repeats the same mistakes once again.
