Azahara Munoz gets off to solid start at Virginia
Spanish Azahara Munoz got off to a stunning start at the Kingsmill Championship, as she posted a 65 in the first round to tie for the third spot along with Paula Creamer of the United States, Maria Hjorth and fellow Spanish Beatriz Recari.
Munoz started the first round in grand style. She did not give much room to her rivals and kept the pressure high right from the start of the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) tournament, being staged at Williamsburg, Virginia.
The Spanish star battled against tough contenders like Paula Creamer, current world number one Yani Tseng, Stacy Lewis, Michelle Wie and Na Yeon Choi, but she remained resilient till the final hole of the round.
She parred the first two holes, which gave her confidence as she launched three straight birdies on the third, fourth and fifth hole, consolidating her position on the leaderboard.
She then pared the next two holes and ended up carding a bogey on the 8th. However, Munoz offset the bogey impact quite tactfully after she sank her fourth birdie on the 9th hole.
On the back nine, Munoz showed the same performance as she did on the front nine. She avoided making any bogey, which proved beneficial for her overall score. Other contenders also put their best foot forward in order to score well in the morning sun.
The Spanish golfer carded two back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th hole. She grabbed spectators’ attention once again after she sank a seemingly difficult birdie-putt on the final hole.
Speaking to the media at the end of the first round, Munoz said that she is pretty happy after making a solid start. She hopes that she will be able to continue the tournament with the same strength and momentum.
“Everything was working well. I hit a lot of fairways, I was hitting really good drives. I hit, I think, 17 greens and a lot of them pretty close so I gave myself a lot of chances. And I hit a lot of putts, and a few of them I missed short of it, but I guess I need to get a little more used to the speed,” Munoz shared.
