Azahara Munoz grabs second spot in Walmart NW Arkansas Championship 2012
Spanish Azahara Munoz displayed a stunning performance in the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship 2012, as she fired an overall 202 to grab the second spot on the leaderboard.
Munoz, who is going places in the current season, set foot on the course of Pinnacle Country Club, Rogers, in an impressive style and strengthened her position on the leaderboard by posting good scores in each
of the three rounds.
The Spanish star got off to a very sensible start, as she stood at the 9th position at the end of the first round. She fired a 69 on the opening day, putting herself in a more comfortable position
than most of her rivals.
Although the roster featured some of the most fearsome names on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Association) Tour, the rising golfer did what she had planned for the title.
Analysts said that Munoz was not considered as the hot favourite for this tournament, but she played a better-than-expected game.
Sharing her thoughts about her solid performance in all the three rounds, the Spanish prodigy said that she is more than happy after beating big names in the field.
She said that her swing and strokes were perfect, and this was what kept her going. Speaking of resistance from other players, Munoz said that she was so thrilled when she came close to beating the winner Ai
Miyazato, but due to some lapses she made in the first two rounds, she could not make a dent in her nearest rival’s position.
“I played really well. I hit the driver really well and I hit my irons to the green extremely well today. I made an eagle on 5, so that was really nice. I gave myself a lot of chances. My putting was just
short of the hole a lot today. I was maybe a little too tentative,” she said.
The 24-year-old Spanish was brimming with confidence when she started her final round. She shot four birdies and one eagle. Most importantly, she avoided making any bogey and played every hole with precision.
“Everything was great except for 18. I hit a great drive and I was between my 5-wood and my hybrid, so I ended up hitting hybrid and I hit it too hard and I pushed it to the right and I didn't get the birdie.
But other than that, I was extremely happy with my round”.
