Azahara Munoz thrilled about Europe’s success at Medinah
Spanish Azahara Munoz’s fiery performance at the Sybase Match Play Championship 2012 was definitely a morale booster, but she appears to be equally thrilled by the Europe’s success at the
Ryder Cup 2012.
Europe’s ruthless performance in the most prestigious event of men’s golf was nothing short of amazing, as they outrivaled their American adversaries in a resounding fashion.
Munoz recently spoke her mind with the LET (Ladies European Tour), expressing her feelings over the huge success European inflicted on the team USA.
Munoz said she was more than thrilled after she saw her fellow Europeans rout Americans on their own soil, Medinah Country Clun, Medinah, Illinois, United States.
The Spaniard said that the only thing that helped the team Europe beat battle-hardened American was resilience and confidence. She said that she watched the match with interest because this
is going to help the continent’s female golfers boost their morale and do the same at the coming Solheim Cup 2013, slated to be played at Colorado, United States.
Munoz said Europeans put their trust in their game despite the fact the match had become so intense that winning seemed an uphill task.
“I think the key was that they never gave up. Saturday afternoon was looking really ugly and they turned the last two matches around, which was huge, even though they had a slim chance to
win,” Munoz said.
She went on to say that all the players got in touch with each other, sharing their input and experience in an attempt to bounce back—and in the end—they did fine. “They were tweeting that
night that they still had a chance and every time they got interviewed they believed in themselves and I think that’s why it turned it around”.
When asked how the Ryder Cup success is going to impact European female golfers’ game as they will face Americans at Colorado next year, Munoz said that it can be very helpful for the players
if they can keep in mind this success.
She said that American line-up has been stronger than Europe, but the recent records show that anyone can beat the odds by showing a better performance.
Munoz said that watching the Ryder Cup brought her sharply back to the 2011 Solheim Cup as this match had also slipped into a more intense phase in the final moments, just like it happened
at Medinah.
“I felt kind of the same although we turned it around in the last hour and they turned it around during the whole day. Obviously there is a lot to learn, because they came back from losing
a lot, but we did that last year too at Solheim,” the LET titan said.
When asked which team is likely to win the 2013 Solheim Cup, Munoz said that she is confident Europe will steal the show once again, but players will have to be more careful as the crowd will
be supporting America.
