Pakistan’s Azhar Ali has admitted that he was nervous batting in the nineties, but skipper Misbah-ul-Haq helped him reach his maiden ton in Test match cricket against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/United-Arab-Emirates-c3033 (UAE)
on Thursday, October 27, 2011.
Azhar had scored 10 half-centuries in Test cricket and was desperate to reach three figures. He managed to get closer on a few occasions, but was unable to reach the milestone.
However, the 26-year-old finally brought his maiden ton up during the second Test of the three match series against Sri Lanka. He scored exactly 100 runs off 242 balls with the help of nine boundaries.
The solid right-handed batsman was adjudged leg-before-wicket just before the close of the second day’s play. He was extremely disappointed, as the ball had first hit his bat then onto the pads.
However, umpire http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 did not see the edge and rule the batsman out.
Although the decision went wrong, Azhar will be happy that he had already reached his century by then.
After finally making it to three figures, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755’s first-drop batsman said, “I was really nervous because this was the third time I was in my nineties and still could not get a century till now. Misbah bhai [brother] was very helpful and he told me just
to bat normally and boundaries will come and not to go for a bad shot.”
Commenting on the importance of scoring a century, Azhar stated, “If you want to become a great player you have a play a big innings. I was missing that so I wanted to continue and get a good score. I have missed a few hundreds before and hopefully I will
make up for that later on.”
With the help of Azhar’s century, Pakistan ended day two of the match with a first innings lead of 42 runs. The team still has six more wickets remaining and captain Misbah is unbeaten on 40 with a couple of more good batsmen to come.
The Men in Green will look forward winning this match and take a 1-0 lead in the series.
