In his interview for Pakpassion, Azhar revealed that the former Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), General Tauqeer Zia offered him the captaincy but he refused because the all-rounder felt that he wanted to concentrate on his individual performance
at that time and captaining the Green Shirts would have been a difficult job, especially because there were a number of super stars in that team. However, he repents his decision now.
The all-rounder said, “I would say it was the biggest mistake of my cricket career. May be my career would have turned out differently if I had accepted the captaincy. People didn’t want me to become the captain. I also rejected it [the captaincy] at that
time. I thought it was too early for me. I just wanted to concentrate on my cricket.”
He praised the performance of Zia as the head Pakistan cricket and feels that the former military man did a great job for the country and said that the former chairman had great confidence in his abilities as a cricketer.

Azhar has been a great servant of Pakistan cricket but now he is settled in England and is just concentrating on County cricket instead of harbouring hopes for an international return.
