Hello,

I plan to drive to London with a few friends for next year.

Are there addresses of cheap hotels or B & B you may recommend me, around London?

Since I plan to come by car, the accomodation may be up to 30 miles away from the downtown.

Thanks in advance for your help.

  1. Hi,

London being one of the most expensive cities to stay in the world, it is very hard to find a cheap hotel in London. In central London you can find some good b&b's or cheap hotels, which you can also check out at: http://www.discountcityhotels.net/HotDea...

The accommodations shown here may not be the cheapeset, but surely a good, clean, comfortable and close to many tourist attractions, shopping areas, restaurants and pubs to make your stay an enjoyable one.

You can also refine your search according to your taste.

  2. Have a look at Enjoy England's accommodation finder. All results are within 10 miles of London -

Hope you find somewhere great to stay!

  3. You should check out this website.

    http://www.londonhotelscheap.org.uk

  4. No need to look so far out of the city center.  There are plenty of fun, affordable and clean B&B's right in the heart of London.  London B&B's aren't as charming and homey as the ones in the country, but they're much less expensive than large hotels and offer private ensuite rooms that are quite clean.

http://www.4hotels.co.uk is my favourite site for B&B browsing. This site lets you browse B&Bs by region of London, so if you do fancy staying out of the center or anywhere in particular, you can narrow it down that way. The bigger sites like www.hotels.com, www.expedia.com, etc. usually have some B&B listings for London as well.

As far as personal experience goes, one of my favs is the Vegas hotel near Victoria Station http://www.vegashotel.co.uk/. This room was bizarre since you entered through the loo to get to the bed, however, at least it was ensuite, cheap, clean, included breakfast and had a television. That area around and behind Victoria has dozens of similar B&Bs, and the same is true of areas surrounding most of the city's main central train stations, King's cross area has loads, it's not quite as close to the city center but it is close to excellent transportation. Staying near Victoria is a good idea because of all the great transportation connections and it's a safe area.

I'd also recommend the Hotel St. Simeon B&B in Kensington http://www.stsimeon.com/. This B&B had spacious rooms, gorgeous lobby, great breakfasts and was in a really nice area of the city, right off Gloucester Road tube station.

Rates for these types of B&Bs usually start at around 40 pounds ($80) for a double room. Cheers!

  5. Since you have a car, it is expensive to drive a car into the congestion zone. and to park it. I suggest that you find a hotel close to center city with free parking, near a tube stop. Park you car and leave it there.

Premier Inn is the largest hotel chain in the UK, and has a number of hotels near tube stops outside of the center city. Many times you can find a place for 70 or 80 pounds.

  6. 30 miles from central London basically takes you OUT of London!

Also bear in mind that driving within central London is both expensive (congestion charge, parking) and time consuming thanks to the traffic problems caused by environmental traffic control measures (narrowing streets, adding cycle and bus lanes, re-phasing traffic lights to cause hold-ups). So if you think 30 miles means you can drive into London each day forget it! The hotel savings would not justify it. Since you have a long lead in time i would suggest one of the most talked about b&b's (for the right reasons) within central London, the Luna and Simone. If you leave it late your likely to find its full.

  7. The best place to find cheap hotels at the last minute is www.laterooms.com.

If you plan on booking way in advance like you are then you can get good deals a lot of ways.  www.tripadvisor.com has a few booking engines plus loads of reviews from travellers who have already stayed there.

The Strand Palace Hotel is central and great for Covent Garden and theatres.  It is from 70 pounds a night for a single room so good value for a 3 star.

I'd stick to the larger hotels as some of the smaller ones at the cheaper end of the scale can be a bit of a drug dealer / prostitute type place if you're not careful in London!

www.smoothhound.co.uk is a good website for B&B's and small family owned hotels around London so you could find a good deal there if you're happy to be outside London.

Other hotel search websites are www.opodo.co.uk, www.expedia.co.uk, www.hotelclub.com and www.lastminute.com.

  8. Are you planning on visiting any place outside London? If so, I'd understand if you want to have a car to drive to those other places. On the other hand, if your plan is to go sightseeing in London and see all the famous landmarks, you'd be much better off using public transport instead.

Roads in central London are jammed with cars, so you get around much faster travelling by tube. More importantly, finding a parking space close to what you wanna see can be extremely difficult. It's no much fun driving around the back streets of say, Westminster to find somewhere to park and then have to walk 10 minutes from the car to say, Big Ben.

If the main purpose of the trip is to do sightseeing in London and enjoy London's night life, by far the best thing you can do is to stay somewhere central and use public transport.
