B.J. Upton talks about his “great memories” of Tampa Bay Rays – MLB News Update

After signing a record five year $75.25 million contract with the Atlanta Braves, outfielder B.J. Upton started to talk about his “great memories” with Tampa Bay Rays. He spent most of his first day introducing himself at Turner Field. However, by the end
of the day it was clear he wanted to live in his memories for a while.
There are many reasons why Upton opted to sign a contract with the Braves. Firstly, the Braves made him an irresistible $75 million five year offer, which is the largest for a free agent in the club’s history. Secondly, the Rays did not make an effort to
retain Upton, who hit a career best 28 home-runs in the last season.
Joe Maddon and company made a one year $13.3 million qualifying offer at the end of the season to be eligible for draft pick compensation. The Rays also knew that multiple Major League Baseball teams were interested in signing a deal with Upton but they
had no option but to let him go.
In a press conference on announcing his signing with the Braves, Upton said he has no grudges for leaving the Rays and he will always love to look back at his time in Tampa Bay. However, he acknowledged the way Braves embraced him during November 15 recruiting
voyage.
"I loved playing in Tampa," Upton told the Tampa Bay Times. "I loved playing with those guys. And I wish I could have continued to do that. But I think we both know that wasn't going to happen. I was prepared to leave mentally. And I'm happy with the way
it turned out."
"I look back on my time in Tampa with a lot of great memories and a lot of great teammates," he said later. "I grew up in the big leagues, so there were a lot of ups and down. But I wouldn't change a thing."
Rays’ executive vice president Andre Friedman admitted that Upton was an integral part of his organisation and it will not be easy to find a suitable replacement for him. Upton, who also received a $3 million signing bonus, will be looking to continue the
good work in 2013 to help the Braves achieve their goals.
