  1. Doing something easy really good is better than doing something hard mediocure.  try and make it look relaxed and fun.

  2. It wouldn't really be wise of me to tell you steps, since I can't show you them, and you shouldn't really attempt steps above your level anyway. Besides, the judges will be more impressed if you dance simple steps really well than if you dance complicated steps badly. One important factor of competition ballroom is presentation. Wear clothes that are appropriate for the style, don't have makeup that's way over the top. Also, try and look confident. Nothing stands out more than a really confident couple. And remember to smile! Even if it looks fake, a fake smile is better than no smile at all. Hope this helps!

  3. Basics done well outscore fancier patterns done less well every time. Stick with what's in your comfort zone, because if you're having fun, it'll show and score. Floorcraft is more in the man's province, but it's important not to obstruct the flow of traffic.

  4. My best advice if this is your first competition are these few tips everyone always forgets.  ONE smile - always smile - no one likes watching dancers that look uncomfortable or angry - ALWAYS SMILE, even if you miss a step - above all you are performing - smile like a true performer.  TWO wardrobe check - ALWAYS do a dress rehearsal, right down to the underwear/dance pants you plan on wearing.  Wardrobe malfunctions happen, but a dress rehearsal can avoid most issues.  THREE Latin dances have cuban motion, bend your knees, DO NO TAKE HEEL LEADS, and keep your upper body stable.  FOUR Smooth dances use heel leads, USE THEM when you are supposed to.  Good luck :)

  5. You must be so excited! As long as your lead knows the rules of etiquette for ballroom, you'll be set. I'm sure you already know the "international panic signal" - if you see another couple that you are about to collide with, simply tap your partner on the shoulder (gently). Technique is important in competition. Make sure your face is in character with the dance. Follow the dress code.

    Good luck and have fun!!!
