BAM not happy with the quivering run of Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat – Badminton news
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is not happy with the quivering run of country’s top shuttlers, Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat. The pair failed to perform well in the recent events and the governing body qualms over the situation as the 2012
London Olympics are just 10 months away.
Tan Boon and Koo Kien, ranked at number 5, are the top bet for Malaysia in the 2012 London Olympics as they are expected to be the only shuttlers to represent the country at the mega event. However, their quivering performance for the last 16 months has
made their position meagre when it comes to perform in major tournaments.
Nadzmi Salleh, the president of BAM is said that the Coaching and Training Committee (CTC) is expected to do something to get the pair out of their bad patch.
Nadzmi said, "We discussed the performance of the doubles players in the World Championships and Rexy too. Coaching is an important aspect in improving the players but we have not made any final decision and want the coaching and training committee to deliberate
on the issue and come up with the best solution."
He further added, "The CTC will be looking into the various aspects of what went wrong in the World Championships and to improve the training programme in order to help Kien Keat-Boon Heong win a medal in the Olympics."
Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien brought a huge disappointment to BAM when they failed to pass the Men’s Doubles quarter-final round in the BWF World Championships 2011 by losing to the lower ranked Korean pair.
They were the fourth seeds in the Men’s Doubles draw of the Championship but they could not make their mark over the Korean shuttlers in their five previous meetings. In the recent events of Denmark Open Premier Super Series and French Open Super Series,
the Malaysian duo failed in the opening rounds.
BAM secretary, Ng Chin Chai wants the shuttlers and coaches to probe into the basic reason behind the prolonged poor performance of Kien Keat and Boon Heong. The duo is the only medal hope in Men’s Doubles’ category in the Olympic Games and they need to
get back on the right track if they want to win the medal.
