BAM optimistic for gold medal in SEA Games despite the absence of Lee Chong Wei – Badminton news
Despite the fact that Malaysia’s Men’s Singles World Number One shuttler, Lee Chong Wei is giving a miss to the event, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is still optimistic to win the gold medal at the 2011 SEA Games, which will take place in Indonesia,
from November 12-19.
BAM is confident for the gold medal in the category of Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. In Women’s Doubles, Chin Eei h*i and Wong Pei Tty, the former gold medallist of SEA Games, are expected to repeat their tremendous performance. In the Mixed Doubles
category, Goh Liu Ying and Chan Peng Soon are the best bet to win a gold medal for Malaysia.
Ng Chin Chai, the secretary of BAM, expressed that the absence of elite shuttlers including Koo Kien Keat, Tan Boon Heong and Lee Chong Wei has put pressure on younger shuttlers to deliver a better performance but he also said that all participants will
put up a great show of quality badminton.
He further expressed about the absence of the top shuttlers by saying, “Despite the absence of our top players, we will still be fighting for gold as Pei Tty-Eei h*i and Peng Soon-Liu Ying should be around. They are capable of battling for gold. We are also
hoping for some surprises from the others.”
While talking about the Men’s Doubles back-up shuttlers who will participate in the SEA Games, Ng Chin added, “Back-up pair Goh Wei Shem-Lim Khim Wah have been showing good progress while the second spot is going to be an affair to fill the void left by
Kien Keat-Boon Heong.”
Ng Chin said that Men’s Singles shuttlers including Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, Chong Wei Feng, Goh Soon Huat and Cham Kwong Beng will also put up a great show by playing world-class badminton at the 2011 SEA Games. He asserted that this is the right time for
these shuttlers to prove their worth and win glory for their country.
After the resignations of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, BAM has made some changes in the Men’s Doubles category. Now, Ong Soon Hock, the former partner of Fairuzizuan, will play with the partnership of Mak Hee Chun, whereas, Hoon
Thien How, the former partner of Mohd Zakry, will continue playing with a new partner, Tan Wee Kiong.
Malaysia has a young squad and all shuttlers are working hard to make their mark in major international events and the SEA Games will also serve this purpose. The event is a golden opportunity for back-up players of Malaysia to make their mark in the arena
of elite shuttlers of the world.
