BAM rules out any chance of immediate overhaul in its structure – Badminton Update
Malaysia’s recent failure in Thomas Cup Finals sparked a debate about structural revamp in Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) but national body has refused to do any changes on emergency basis.
President BAM Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh announced that they are just focusing to save honour in badminton event of the 2012 London Olympics.
However, he admitted that they are planning to introduce new strategy to expand talent pool and find world beaters like Lee Chong Wei.
He said, “With just two months to the Olympics, it’s more important to see what we can do for now. However, we will focus on grassroots development. We also need to unearth more talents like Chong Wei.”
Earlier, Malaysia exposed its fragility in absence of the maestro Chong Wei and crashed out of quarter-finals in prestigious team event.
They lost 3-0 to China and their failure resulted in severe criticism from badminton critics who demanded Nadzmi to step down.
They targeted governing body for its poor managerial skills which are putting country’s badminton future in danger.
The national coaches also came under fire for their pitiable strategies in Thomas Cup Finals and this probably made Nadzmi to revise his plan of action for future.
BAM president showed intentions to start a talent hunt across the country to ensure Malaysia’s supremacy in the arena. He also vowed to throw new challenge to coaching and training staff.
Nadzmi said, “We aim to develop more players but to do that, we also need world class coaches. I’ve also issued a challenge to the current coaches to try and develop their players into world beaters.”
At the moment, coaching setup has the services of several gurus like Tan Kim Her, Rashid Sidek, Tey Seu Bock, Rosman Razak, Pang Cheh Chang and Jeremy Gan but still nation has not seen any world class player after World Number one Chong Wei.
BAM was suggested to follow working model of China and South Korea where a chief coach is responsible to handle team affairs.
Nadzmi admitted that China and Korea have taken their badminton to a different level and announced that they will also take all necessary steps after the 2012 London Olympics.
