BAM says training programme was not right for Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong – Badminton news
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) said that the training programme of Doubles coach, Rexy Mainaky, was not right for Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong which resulted in the bad performance of the duo at the 2011 BWF World Championships, held at
the Wembley Arena in the second week of August.
World Number Five ranked Kien Keat and Boon Heong, failed to live up to expectations at the World Championships as they lost to the Korean pair of Yoo Yeon Seong and Ko Sung Hwan in the Men’s Doubles quarter-final.
The loss was not the fault of the shuttlers as their training programme was not enough to prepare them to become world champions. This fact was discovered on a scientific basis by Dr Ramlan Aziz, the director of the National Sports Institute (NSI). He presented
all his findings to BAM officials including Ng Chin Chai, Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, Kenny Goh and James Selvaraj.
According to Ramlan, the Malaysian Men’s Doubles top seeds were not playing at the same level in the current meet of World Championships as they did in the 2010 edition of this tournament.
While talking about the findings of Ramlan, Kenny Goh said, “Dr Ramlan showed us an in–depth video analysis on Kien Keat-Boon Heong. It showed their flaws and mistakes. He highlighted the difference in their game. Last year, they were on an attack mode but
this year, they went defensive.”
He further added, “Based on all these scientific findings, we have concluded that the problem lies with the training programme. We are not undermining Rexy but at the same time, we do not deny that the findings led us to believe the problem lies in the training
programme and the coach.”
Now, BAM is looking forward to resolve the issue regarding the training programme, which is the most crucial element to make a player a World Champion. Rexy’s position is also in danger as the findings of Ramlan are clearly indicating that the problem lies
with the coach and training programme, and not with the shuttlers.
