BAM stands firm on dropping the pair of Tan Bin and Gan Teik: Badminton News
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) stands firm on its decision to drop the Men’s Doubles pair of Tan Bin Shen and Gan Teik Chai from the Malaysian squad for the mega event of 2011 World Badminton Championship, starting from August 8, at London.
The duo, Tan Bin and Gan Teik are currently ranked at 16th position in Men’s Doubles world ranking. They qualified for the mega event on merit and they are the second seeds in Malaysia. On the place of the 16th seeds, BAM has decided
to send the World Number 27 pair of Hoon Thien How and Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif, in the World Championship along with the top seeds, Tan Boon Heong and Koo Kien Keat.
The decision of BAM received a severe reaction from Tan Bin and Gan Teik. On which BAM's Secretary, Ng Chin Chai, said that the decision was not made to discredit the pair.
“We made this decision without having any malice, prejudice or bias. But we agree that we sat on the matter too long and the last-minute decisions surprised everyone,” Ng Chin said.
He further added, “The world ranking is not a true reflection of a player’s ability. It cannot be used as a criteria to select our best players.”
He further said that the governing body will make the guidelines clear for the selection criteria of Players for the international events.
He said, “But this incident will expedite our efforts to have clearer guidelines on selection of non-BAM players for international events. We have discussed this with the state secretaries but now we will ensure that they are clearly spelt out.”
The decision has been taken after a long discussion that took two weeks. All important officials along with coaches have unanimously decided to send the duo, Thien How and Mohd Zakry, instead of the pair, Tan Bin and Gan Teik, for the mega event. Ng Chai
said that BAM takes steps which are in the best interest of the country. The selection of a lower ranked pair has been made on their consistent performance for the last six months.
