BAM to continue with a team of coaches instead of a supremo for national squad – Badminton News
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has temporarily decided to have a separate coach for every category rather than to appoint a chief coach to run the national squad.
Malaysian shuttlers practice under the supervision of half dozen coaches and the critics like Cheah Soon Kit and Ong Ewe Hock raised their voices against this working style.
President of BAM, Datuk Seri Nadzmi Mohd Salleh admitted that this is an unsuccessful way of running the affairs but he also stated that BAM has not found any eligible candidate so current team of coaches will continue with their respective jobs.
Nadzmi said, “I agree that it is best to have one expert to run the show. But in BAM, we do not have this luxury. We have not found one person to manage all this. For now we have a team of experts working for us.”
At the moment, the Male Singles shuttlers follow the instructions of Rashid Sidek while Chi Shanrong watches the steps of the Female Singles shuttlers.
On the other hand, Tan Kim Her runs the Men’s Doubles squad while Mixed Doubles’ coach Jeremy Gan will be supervising Women’s Doubles teams also after the resignation of Rexy Mainaky.
Rexy Mainaky has informed the authorities that he will be not be available as coach due to his new commitment as coaching director of Philippines Badminton Association (PBA).
BAM president Nadzmi believes Rexy had done his job and his absence will not affect the training programmes of shuttlers as they can handle themselves properly.
He said, “We have benefited from Rexy and so has Rexy. His absence, however, will not make much difference for us.”
However, it will be huge task to find an eligible successor of Rexy who not only trained the shuttlers but also helped junior coaches to elevate their skills.
Conversely, Nadzmi seems to believe that no one is indispensable and thinks remaining coaches will fill his gap. He also presented a plan of action for next Doubles coach.
He said, “We have to change the way we train. It is now all about speed, power and endurance. This should be the focus when we make plans and change the way we train when new Olympic cycle begin.”
BAM also came under fire for its complex chain of command as not only the national squad but also the coaching staff is also governed by two high profile committees, the Coaching and Training Committee (CTC) and the High Performance Team (HPT).
