BAM to transfigure current set-up after London Olympics – Badminton News
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is all set to refurbish their existing set-up as secretary general Ng Chin Chai announced that there will be some changes after London Olympics.
The national body came under fire for its controlling system in recent past when two of its foreigner coaches tendered resignation and then a disgraceful exit from Thomas Cup Finals made things even worse.
This put a big question mark on Malaysia’s future in badminton world so BAM has decided to leave no stone unturned and its secretary general briefed that they are planning to take unusual steps after London Games to improve association’s functioning.
Chin Chai said, “There will be drastic changes after the Olympic Games in London. We have to look ahead – we have the Thomas Cup Finals two years down the road and the next big one – the 2016 Olympic Games.”
At the moment, Malaysia is giving all attentions to mega event as they always had to draw blank.
This year, they will bank on injured Lee Chong Wei in Men’s Singles event and the inconsistent Koo Kien Keat-tan Boon Heong in Doubles category while the twosome of Peng Soon and Liu Ying will try to raise country’s flag in Mixed Doubles event.
Chin Chai admitted that association is not ready to revamp its structure as London Games are just two months away and any unnecessary activity can disturb their preparation of the mega event. He also added that they are hoping their campaigners to end Gold
quest by wearing Olympic medals around their neck.
He said, “We will not make any drastic changes now as it will disrupt our preparations. For now, the focus will be on ending our wait for the first gold at the Olympics.”
However, he also stated clearly that current squad will not be there in next edition of Olympics in 2016 as most of them have come to an age where it becomes difficult to maintain required standards of fitness.
Chin Chai, who also is chairman of coaching and training committee, unveiled that they will increase coaching staff as they are planning to gather junior shuttlers from all over the country to put them in a special 2016 squad.
