I am a film student and I am doing research for one of my scripts and I need to know how many times is a person allowed to take the bar exam? I know it differs with different states, but that doesn't really matter, my story can take place wherever. I am actually just looking for a test that a person isn't allowed to take like over two or three times...it doesn't have to be the bar exam, I just don't know too many different types of tests. Thanks!

  1. There's no limit for the New York bar exam, or most other states. In My Cousin Vinny, Joe Pesci's character failed 5 times, then passed. In the Rainmaker, Danny DeVito's character failed 6 times. I have a friend who failed twice so far. He's retaking it tomorrow (when I take it for the first, and hopefully last, time).

After a certain number of tries, it's not worth the expense of the review courses or the time spent studying. The pass rates drop tremendously, first time takers in most states pass about 90% of the time while repeat takers pass about 30%. If you didn't pass the second time, you may just give up. There are other things you can do with a JD besides be a lawyer.

I know that doesn't quite give you the info you want, but I hope it helps anyway. I used to be a filmmaker too in college. Good luck.

  2. As many times as you are willing to pay for in CA
