  1. The problem with your design is your server is exposed to the internet.

First of all why do you need a server, if your network is 10 computers or less you can use a work-group network (peer to peer, p2p) by using windows xp pro or windows vista business or ultimate.

But if you do need a server the best way is like this.

Internet modem connected to a good router (netgear or linksys are fine, but use there business grade models with a hardware firewall included will cost about $85.00) then connect your server and the computers to the router.   This way all your computers are behind the router and not directly exposed to the internet.  Even though the router has a firewall, its a hardware firewall and not the same as a software firewall you install on a computer so u need both.

The router will also act as your DHCP server so no need to configure DHCP on the server itself.  Most routers come with 4 ports, if that's not enough then get an 8 port router.  if 8 ports is not enough, I wouldn't get a bigger router, because then it gets too expensive, i would get an unmanaged switch, that your connect to the router, for the added ports.

If you are using Vista or your data files are very large, make sure you get a giganet router and switch, and use ONLY cat6 cabling.

Simple definition of a stack is a stack is a data structure

  2. Depends on how many station you have ,YOU MUST HAVE A ROUTER,

from router you can go to switches ,stack is actually bunch of switches that you can stack them one on top of others like you have 5 switches there are stands that you can set them one on top of each other,,if you have more than 5 to 10 workstations look for A Cisco router the smallest one cost about $1000 and since it is strong it easily can handle those demands,,lets say you have a Server next to your ROUTER and next door you have room with 5 pc on it you make a connection from a router to a switch than has multiple ports and from those switch ports to your workstations,,I am not sure if you have not done this before ,you won't be able to set your server to function completely and also your Cisco router  need to be configure for your situation, read about it or let some pro do the job, cause cable pulling will be your next problem too.....
