BCCI appoints Duncan Fletcher as Indian coach after Kirsten’s exit

The position was vacant after http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gary-Kirsten-c58527, the coach who led India to their second ever World Cup win, decided to sign off the position. After many observations, rumors and considerations, the BCCI has decided to hire Fletcher for the job.
Fletcher will take over as the Indian Coach starting from the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 Tour. The former Zimbabwean all-rounder is famous for his achievements during his tenure as coach for the English team.
The appointment is for a period of two years. Fletcher’s coaching record boasts of eight consecutive Tests wins for England in 2004 along with a historic triumph in the Ashes series in 2005.
England’s current coach, Andy Flower was also in consideration for the post but given the fact that Flower’s family is happily settled in England, his appointment was a long shot.
However, the 62 year-old Fletcher will shoulder his responsibilities in June, starting with the Caribbean tour which has one Twenty20 International match, five One-Day-Internationals and three Test matches scheduled.
Fletcher, the former Zimbabwean skipper, has played 6 ODIs, scoring 191 runs including the highest score of 71, setting his average at 47.75. He has also scored 2 half-centuries in the limited format of game.
In First-Class cricket, Fletcher has featured in 111 matches and has scored 4095 runs setting his average at 23.67 with 93 runs as the highest score. He has also collected 20 half-centuries in the first-class format of cricket.
With the ball he has claimed 215 wickets setting his best bowling figures at 6 for 31 runs. He also has five 5-wicket hauls to his name.
India currently holds the top position in Test rankings and after the West Indies tour the Indians will set sail for England to play 4 Test matches at Lord’s, Trent Bridge, Edgbaston and the Oval, coupled with one T20 International and five ODIs.
