BCCI summon suspended IPL Chairman, Modi
It started off with the Indian Premier League claiming that they had found “major irregularities” committed by IPL chairman, Latit Modi, who was then suspended. An IPL governing council member, Abdullah Farooq told reporters on June 25th, “the various problems that IPL has gone through were put forward and decisions were taken. We found out major irregularities that have been committed by the past chairman and discussed what will be done and how we would proceed further.”
It is believed that after the inclusion of Kochi and Pune to the league, the board started to realize that Modi had influenced the proceedings in an unfair way. The Board of Control for Cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 said in an official statement, “Mr Modi has made a number of charges but I think many of these things would be cleared when the committee meets.” The charges included financial irregularities relating to the franchise bids for Kochi and Pune, theatrical rights and a conspiracy to create a rebel Twenty20 League in England.
The vote to suspend Modi was unanimous within the BCCI, but since it did not have authority to take action they had to forward the case to the disciplinary committee. The disciplinary committee was given until 26th October to finish its inquiry and decide whether civil or criminal charges should be filed against Modi. “Whether it is a civil or criminal matter, we can only decide after we have probed the legality of the issue,” BCCI president, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shashank-Manohar-c89791 said in a press conference. Modi’s response was through his lawyer, who denied all the charges and responded by claiming that BCCI’s decision to look into civil and criminal charges against Modi were a “legal absurdity”.
Modi’s next move was to reject one of the members on the three man disciplinary committee, Chirayu Amin, claiming that Amin held a grudge against him and would not make a fair decision. Modi had also accused BCCI president, Shashank Manohar and Srinivasan to have harboured grudges against him. However, upon Modi’s request, Manohar rescued himself from the committee. The remaining members are BCCI vice president, Arun Jaitley and president of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Madhya-Pradesh-c809 Cricket Association, Jyotiraditya Scindia.
Modi went a step further and filed a petition in the Bombay High Court against the BCCI on July 8th, requesting that the unfair proceedings of the disciplinary committee against him be quashed. He also asked the court to appoint a mutually acceptable panel to judge his case. Modi challenged the BCCI’s disciplinary committee’s legal authority and the decisions validity, calling it “malafide, illegal, perverse and unconstitutional.” The petition which was filed by Modi’s lawyer, Mehmood Abid urged the court to take immediate action against the BCCI and to prevent it from taking any further action.
It is reported that the current third member BCCI disciplinary committee has sent Modi a letter, summoning him to appear before it on July 16th and defend himself. The BCCI claimed that Modi’s request to remove IPL chairman, Amin from the committee will also be considered. “You are requested to be present in person to address the disciplinary committee on the said issues after which the disciplinary committee/its members shall decide the issues raised,” the letter read. Despite this effort by the BCCI, there has been no word from Modi confirming his presence at the meeting. Modi’s lawyer said in a statement, "Many things can come to pass between now and July 16.”
