BCCI to cross-examine witnesses in Lalit Modi case
To have a deeper insight in Lalit Modi’s case, the disciplinary committee of BCCI is going to have a meeting on the 15th of December where more witnesses will be cross-examined.
Providing details about the meeting, the BCCI officials told the reporters that the meeting - which had been put on hold as Modi had challenged the mandate of the committee saying that it did not have jurisdiction to look into
the matter - will now resume with the hearing procedure after getting the green signal from the apex body.
Considering all the important aspects of the corruption allegations, the meeting, to be held, would cross-examine all the key documents along with the witnesses of the case. The board itself has already started examining some of
the witnesses.
A BCCI official, while requesting his anonymity, said: “The Committee will meet most probably on December 15 to cross examine witnesses and documents in the case. We are trying to finish probe and compile the report in time.”
While attempting to stop the body from investigation, Modi had now forwarded his application to the Supreme Court. A similar application which had been forwarded to the Bombay High Court had already been rejected on the 15th of
July.
Giving his point of view, Modi had stated in the application that he wanted to have a committee comprising of independent persons and not of those who were paid members of the BCCI. He said that the BCCI was expected to give a
biased judgment against him. Accepting the application, the apex court has given a date of the second week of January.
Contrary to Modi’s request, who wanted to have some retired judge or a senior advocate as a member of the committee, the disciplinary committee of BCCI will comprise of Chirayu Amin, the interim chairman of IPL, Arun Jaitley, the
chief of District Cricket Association, and Jyotiraditya Scindia, the president of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Madhya-Pradesh-c809 Cricket Association.
The sources have also revealed that once the court’s verdict upon Modi’s request is out, the committee will also consider summoning him. “We are getting cooperation from him, his lawyers are responding to our queries. But if need
arises, we may ask anybody to appear before us and clear doubts,” said the official.
While replying to the first show-cause notice served on him with the allegations of corruption, Modi had provided a 15,000-page reply. Moreover, he had also provided his detailed replies against the notices issued to him on behalf
of the Board. Besides the allegations for financial corruption, the board had also accused him for undermining the structure of world cricket with his wrongdoings.
