BCCI under fire after http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Duncan-c54739 Fletcher’s appointment as the new Indian coach
The appointment of former Zimbabwean captain, Duncan Fletcher, as the Indian team’s new coach has led to a hot debate in international cricket about the role of foreign coaches. His selection is extremely important, considering the fact that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 are the
current world champions and also the world’s number one ranked Test team.
Fletcher has replaced http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gary-Kirsten-c58527, who left the job after the victorious World Cup campaign, stating a genuine reason that he wants to spend more time with his family back in Cape Town. Kirsten has been the most successful coach in the history of Indian
cricket and Fletcher surely has a huge challenge in front of him to fulfill the South African’s place.
Many former Indian cricketers have slammed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for not selecting a local coach, as it gives an impression to the rest of the world that Indian coaches are not good enough for the job.
There is a general perception in the cricketing world that foreign coaches suit Asian teams, because local coaches tend to indulge themselves in team politics. This is the prime reason behind the fact that India, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 have preferred
foreign coaches since the last decade, as their players also feel more comfortable with them.
Former Indian captain and legendary cricketer, Sunil Gavaskar, is one of those big names who have criticized BCCI’s decision. Gavaskar’s disappointment is quite interesting, as he had referred Kirsten’s name to the BCCI back in 2007-08, when India was looking
for a coach.
The former Indian captain feels that this was right time for Indian cricket officials to have gone for a local coach and give an opportunity to any of India’s big names from the past. Gavaskar also believes that a local can communicate more effectively with
the national team, which is the most important thing at the highest stage of the game.
Gavaskar, said, “There is a perception and a wrong one that an Indian can be influenced and that he will get involved in politics. You are presuming that he cannot be a strong person.”
On the other hand, some big names in international cricket like http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nasser-Hussain-c78777 have come out in support of Fletcher. Both Akram and Hussain have praised BCCI’s decision to go with the former Zimbabwean captain, who has immense experience
of coaching at the international level.
Fletcher became the English cricket team’s coach back in 1999 and served the side for several years. Hussain was http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013’s skipper when Fletcher was made their mentor and the former captain praised the Zimbabwean’s coaching style.
Nasser stated that Fletcher likes to give a free hand to the captain and this would be the best thing for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028 and the Indian team.
Hussain, added, “The first thing that Duncan said to me when we came together as England captain and coach was that the captain was the man in charge, the spokesman, and that the coach should be the man dealing with the off-field issues.”
There is no doubt that Fletcher’s appointment has divided cricket experts into two groups and only time will decide, that which school of thought has a more valid argument.
