BCS standings: week nine
The Bowl Championship Series standings once again provided the college football world with plenty of talking points this week. For the third week in a row, a number one team was defeated and dropped down the standings, giving the rest of the top five a chance
to claim top spot. Meanwhile, there were plenty of shifts throughout the middle and bottom of the standings, as three new teams were able to earn rankings.
Top 5
The top team in the nation fell once again and the top five shifted a great deal. Sitting at the top now is Auburn, who battled past a tough LSU side, pushing their way to the top of the rankings.
Oregon remains in second despite a massive win over UCLA, while Boise State remained at three after a bye week. TCU jumped a spot to fill Auburn’s old place at four and Michigan State made a huge push, moving up from seven, to get into the top five for the
first time this season after a win over Northwestern.
6-10
The 6-10 range underwent a great deal of change, mostly because of Michigan State’s strong play and LSU’s loss to Auburn. Sitting sixth is Missouri, who completed an upset of Oklahoma and jumped from the 11th spot. Seventh spot now belongs to
Alabama, who continues to slowly move up the standings after dropping out of first place. Eight now belongs to Utah, who moved up a spot, while Oklahoma dropped to the ninth place. Rounding out the top ten is Wisconsin, who defeated Iowa at home.
11-15
The 11-15 range did not miss out on the wholesale changes made to the standings this week, as the group is now topped by Ohio State, who was bumped down a spot after the Wisconsin win. The 12th spot is now owned by LSU, who is reeling from its
loss to Auburn. The 13th spot belongs to Stanford, who dropped a position even after their 38-28 win over Washington State.
Nebraska pushed their way up to 14th place after a huge win over Oklahoma State. Finally the top 15 is rounded out by Arizona, who made a three-spot jump from 18 with their win over Washington.
16-20
The 16-20 range may have experienced the most change, as several teams were dropped down or out of the rankings altogether. The group is now topped by Florida State, who is followed closely by Oklahoma State. The 18th spot now belongs to Iowa,
who will have to rebound after a tough loss to Wisconsin.
Nineteenth place now belongs to Arkansas, who defeated Mississippi over the weekend. The group is rounded out by South Carolina, who fell three spots, even though they topped Vanderbilt 21-7.
21-25
The bottom of the rankings changed a great deal as the BCS standings welcomed three new teams to the fold. Leading the group is Mississippi State, who jumped from 24th after a tight win over UAB. The 22nd spot now belongs to Miami (FL),
who defeated North Carolina by 23 points. Virginia Tech was able to move up from 25th place into 23rd with their sixth win in a row. Nevada was given a shot, being placed in the 24th place, while Baylor broke into the rankings
in 25th spot, which marks the first time Baylor has been ranked since 1993.
The AP Top 25 standings differ from the BCS standings most notably in the top five. The AP Poll has Oregon as the number one team followed by Boise State for the second week in a row, while Auburn sits in fourth. Meanwhile, TCU and Michigan State placed
the same in both polls.
