BCS top five: Week 13
The Bowl Championship Series is entering the all important final two weeks of the season and the clubs who sit at the top of the heap are beginning to feel the pressure like never before. At this point in the year a loss would be devastating and would mean
plummeting down the standings and kissing a shot at a national title goodbye. With that in mind, several top five teams enter the most important week of the 2010 season.
Oregon Ducks
The Ducks had the week off after winning a very close game over the California Golden Bears in week 11. Oregon is still the most dynamic team in the nation and can be expected to come back well rested and with something to prove in week 13. Oregon has perhaps
their most difficult game of the season against the Arizona Wildcats on Friday 26 November. A win would all but certify their number one ranking and place them in the title game. However, a loss to the Wildcats would likely drop them to fourth in the standings,
taking away their championship hopes. With that said, the Ducks should be able to handle a three-loss Arizona side. Expect Oregon to get back to their patented high-octane offence, which has helped them score over 40 points in all but one game this season.
Auburn Tigers
The Auburn Tigers have the most difficult end of year schedule in the top five, as they will be taking on the Alabama Crimson Tide in week 13 and then follow it up with the Southeastern Conference championship game in the Georgia Dome, against the South
Carolina Gamecocks. Thankfully, the Tigers are coming off a bye week and had an opportunity to get in some much needed rest. Weighing even heavier on the Tigers are the allegations that Cam Newton’s father received money from the university in exchange for
his son’s letter of commitment. Although Newton has not been ruled ineligible and does not seem to be letting the investigation bother him, there is a possibility that the Heisman trophy favourtie could be taken out of the line-up by the NCAA. The Tigers’
berth in the national title game is anything but certain and the club will have to play their best football of the season if they hope to remain undefeated and earn a date with the Ducks.
TCU Horned Frogs
The TCU Horned Frogs tight win over the San Diego State Aztecs and the subsequent poor play from the Utah Utes in their match-up with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish crushed their chances of playing for a national title and will likely see the club leap-frogged
by the Boise State Broncos. The Horned Frogs final game is against a 1-10 New Mexico Lobos team, which will do nothing to help them in the BCS standings. Expect an unbeaten TCU squad to finish fourth this season.
Boise State Broncos
The Broncos were given new life with TCU’s tight win over the Aztecs and now have a legitimate chance at playing for a national title. The Broncos will see the #19 Nevada Wolf Pack in week 13 and can move into third with a victory. Moreover, if Auburn loses
one of their remaining two games the Broncos will likely take their place in second. Several things need to fall in place for Boise State, but they are once again back in the national championship conversation.
LSU Tigers
The LSU Tigers continue to play well, but continue to have no real chance at playing for a national title. The 10-1 club would need all of Oregon, Auburn, Boise State and TCU to lose to just be considered for the top two. LSU has managed an incredible season,
but will not be playing for a national title.
