BCS top five preview: week 11
Heading into the final four weeks of the season, the Bowl Championship Series is starting to heat up a great deal. The top five teams in the country still have plenty of work to do before the national championship is set and there is plenty of room for movement
among the top five.
Oregon Ducks
The Oregon Ducks still lead the way in both the BCS standings and the AP Top 25 poll. In week 10 the Oregon offence once again showed why it is the best in the country and why the Ducks have been rolling over opponents since week one. Oregon drowned the
Washington Huskies, winning 53-16, leaving nothing up to the imagination in the BCS.
The Ducks' final three games are against the California Golden Bears, Arizona Wildcats and the Oregon State Beavers. The way Oregon has been playing this season it would be a surprise if they struggled with their next three opponents. The Ducks now have
a clear path to the national championship.
Auburn Tigers
Auburn ran over an easy Chattanooga Mocs side in week 10 competition, winning 62-24. Unfortunately, the Tigers were expected to demolish Chattanooga and the win failed to make a dent in the Ducks' lead atop the BCS. Moreover, the Tigers have the most difficult
end of season schedule, as they meet the Georgia Bulldogs in week 11 and the Alabama Crimson Tide in the final game of the season on 26 November. If the Tigers are able to go undefeated, they will qualify for the national title game. However, if they suffer
a loss they could be on the outside looking in.
TCU Horned Frogs
The TCU Horned Frogs proved they were one of the best teams in the nation with an impressive 47-7 win over the former fifth ranked team in the nation, the Utah Utes. With the victory the Horned Frogs have to be seriously considered for a national championship.
TCU has not played a close game all season, defeating teams such as Oregon State, the Baylor Bears, and Utah. Nevertheless, TCU will only be able to make a title game if they remain undefeated and one of Oregon or Auburn loses. The Horned Frogs should not
have any trouble going undefeated, as they have easy games against the San Diego Aztecs and the New Mexico Lobos to end the season. Therefore TCU fans will be crossing their fingers when Auburn meets Alabama.
Boise State Broncos
With the TCU win over Utah the chances that the Boise State Broncos play for a national title are almost zero. Regardless of the Broncos' impressive 42-7 win over the Hawaii Warriors in week 10, they remained in fourth spot and are unlikely to get an opportunity
to play on 3 January. The Broncos are currently riding a 23-game winning streak and they will likely finish the season with a 27-game winning streak.
However, going undefeated for a second straight season is not going to aid their chance at a national championship. The Broncos need two of, Oregon, Auburn and TCU to lose in order to have an outside chance. Making matters worse is the fact that even if
Auburn and TCU were to suffer a defeat, a one-loss team will likely get a title bid before the Broncos.
LSU Tigers
Despite constant criticism the LSU Tigers have been able to put together an 8-1 season. The Tigers' recent win over the Crimson Tide cemented them in the top five. However, the Tigers have little chance at playing for a national title, as they will need
three of the teams in front of them to lose and then they would have to win the Southeastern Conference championship over Auburn, just to be in the conversation. The Tigers have managed a very impressive 2010 campaign, but they have little chance of playing
for a title.
