  1. Typical beginning strings classes will teach you to play one of four instruments: violin, viola, cello and double bass. The violin is the smallest, and the double bass is the largest(and typically the most difficult to play).  The class will(or should) teach you basic musicianship: how to read music properly, how to count time, how to hold and play the instrument, etc.  


  2. I guess it depends on what class it is - if it's a group class with one teacher you'll probably play what that teacher is best with, if it's a large class with many teachers you'll probably get to pick what you want to try. Also it depends if by strings you mean guitar, or violin/viola/cello/dbass.
