i'm fifteen, but i will be sixteen this coming year. i live in an upper-income town, so about ninety percent of the students get a new car for their birthday. i want a car, too, but i seriously feel bad to ask my parents for such an expensive gift. what is a safe, attractive car around 20-25k? i know some of my friends are getting range rovers and bmw's but i just don't feel right doing that.

any tips or advice from knowledgeable answerers is appreciated! :]

  1. The new Ford Mustangs are around that price range. They have very good looks and are sporty and fast too. If i were you i would ask for a new Ford Mustang.

  2. You are forcing us to make some asumptions, but I'll give it a try.

Since gas is headed for $7.00 a gallon, you'd be smart to get a car that gets good fuel mileage.  But you're young and probably don't want an "Old Person's Car" which is how I'd classify a Prius.

Then there is the "street cred" issue to consider.  If all your friends are driving BMWs, etc., then you don't want to be driving aToyota Yaris or the like.

My choice would be the Mini Cooper.  It's made by BMW, gets 34 mpg on the highway, is quick, handles like a go-cart (fun, and good for avoiding accidents), and can be personalized to match your personality for under $25K.  For a little more, you could scrimp on the options and get the quicker "S" version and still stay in budget.

Notice I deliberately didn't say it was "cute," but if that's important, there ya go.

  3. a VW jetta SE  mine costs around $23 K . It's very comfortable, stylish, and really fun to drive. mine is white exterior and black interior. and i absolutely lovee it! By the way I just turned 18 and i worked my butt off to get this car. It's a German car and has got a sunroof, 6 disc cd changer, satellite radio, heated mirrors including side mirrors, very roomy interior, heated front seats, very safe car (has 8 airbags), its 5 cylinder, has 10 speakers! and 3 layers of sound proof, you could even shift from drive to sport mode, good soft brakes, a HUGE trunk, very nice interior LIGHTS (bluish purple and RED!) and just a lot of good features ...oh and the side mirrors have lights for when you switch lanes..(the signals)  it's really cute!! especially after i tinted my windows. i think this car shouldve been priced more... Oh and one more thing, the Jetta comes with a FULL sized spare tire, not a donut like other cars.!

  4. I bought a Prius for 24k. I love it, who else get 52mpg? Also, people think its a slow car, but it accelerates like a m**o and handles pretty well.

It also has a touchscreen menu. A digital speedometer, compared to an analog.

**In my opinion. Sixteen year olds shouldn't get cars, they should borrow parents cars. I've known people that have been seriously injured because their parents thought that buying a fast car would be great for the kid. Plus it feels sooo much better when you buy something for yourself. Because it's YOUR car that YOU worked for.

**What's this guy talking about a Prius being "Old Person's Car", I rarely see an elderly person drive a prius, I see elderly people drive mustangs, bmw's, mercedes, motorcycles, and corvettes. I'm 20 and I don't think I'm an "Old Person" driving my Prius

  5. A Honda CRV you can get a LX four Wheel Drive for a little under $20.

  6. How about a Honda Civic EX Coupe?

With Leather Interior, Navigation System, Sunroof, Alloy Wheels, and plenty more features will run you about $23,000.  Plus, the Civic has excellent safety ratings considering most kids wreck their first car.
