Here is what I NEED for my GPS that I will be getting for my birthday so I need to tell my brother which one to get (he works at Fry's but he's a crazy driver and so we have different tastes in GPS systems).

-One that TELLS me where to go all the time (e.g. "Turn right on ______ street", "In 1 mile, turn left on _____ street", etc.).

-One that SHOWS me which lane(s) to go on when I'm on the freeway (which I will be on A LOT starting this summer)

-One with a pretty BIG screen because I'm nearsighted.

-One that you can charge in the car (which I hope is all of the GPS systems out there).

Just anything that you think is the BEST quality and if you have tried it before, tell me how you liked/hated it. Thanks so much you guys!

  1. Garmin Nuvi!!

  2. Garmin Nuvi.

With the company background being strong, and with my experience with Garmin eTrex GPS systems, I strongly recommmend it.

  3. I have a Garmin Nuvi 350, which is the least expensive model with text to speech capability, meaning it says turn right on Mulberry street, instead of just "Turn right ahead".  So far, I love it and my wife, who drives all over the state for meetings, won't leave home without the GPS in her car now.  Wrong turns are quickly corrected and the GPS will recalculate your route if you have to avoid traffic.

I've driven thousands of  miles and the Nuvi has been remarkably accurate.  My research indicated it was more accurate than the TomTom and I believe that to be true beased on input from friends who own TomToms.

The 350 is a basic GPS, no bluetooth and minimal MP3 capabilities, but I didn't want those features.  You can move up to the 360 or higher for those features, but the GPS functionality remains the same.  The screen size is decent, it's big enough to be easy to see while driving, but doesn't interfere with visibility.  All functions besides on/off are touch screen and easy to use.  Also, and this may not seem important now, but the Nuvi has the best mounting system on the market.  I read plenty of reviews of other GPS units where owners complained about the mounting coming loose during driving and getting caught up in their feet.  MY Nuvi goes on the glass and stays on the glass.  The only reason the mount has ever come off is because I've moved it to another vehicle.  Just make sure the glass is clean before mounting.

The 350 will tell you a mile out at highway speeds about the next turn, to give you time to get in the correct lane.  It's not going to show you you're in the middle lane of a 3 lane highway, if that's what you're looking for, but I don't know of any that will.  It has a car charger and lasts about 8 hours with a full charge.

  4. Garmin Nuvi.
