BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open and 2010 Kremlin Cup; Title Snatchers
The twenty seven year old Roberta Vinci played some great tennis to beat Julia Gorges in the title battle of the BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg Open Women’s singles competition in two sets on Sunday. The final match score was 6-3,
6-4.
The unseeded Vinci, who turned professional back in 1999 made her way into the finals after posting some impressive victories in the initial rounds and gave the eighth seed Julia all sorts of problems in her title battle, breaking
early in both sets on Sunday. The professional tennis player from Italy blasted a total of eight aces while getting past her foe with the help of her all-court game.
"Julia is a very good player, but I do not think that today was her best day. The turning point for me this week was my second round match, when I won 7-6 in the third set. After that I knew I could go far, maybe the semis. Today
I tried to stay focused on every point, especially on my serve games, and it worked. Now I am going to go home for a week and then to the Fed Cup final,” added Vinci after the match on Sunday.
The Taranto born player as a result of this victory grabbed her third career WTA crown on the tour, having already won on clay at Bogota back in 2007 as well as in Barcelona last year. She has improved to a final mark of 3-1 after
ending as runner up at Barcelona earlier in 2010 to Francesca Schiavone who also won the clay court French Open in Roland Garros.
Julia, on the other hand was competing in her second career WTA title battle, having already won on the clay of Bad Gastein in 2010. She had defeated the fourth seed Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in the quarterfinal match back on Friday.
In the doubles clash, the second seed pair of Tathiana Garbin and Timea Bacsinszky upset the top seed Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova in two sets to win their third WTA title as a pair. The final match score was 6-4,
6-4. They previously grabbed a title in Budapest and Prague this summer.
In other action from Moscow, Flavia Pennetta and Gisela Dulko, who made their way into the final of the 2010 Kremlin Cup without even dropping a single set, brushed aside the third seed duo of Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Sara
Errani in a three setter victory on Sunday. The final match score was 6-3, 2-6, 10-6.
The pair who won their sixth title together on the tour will next contest in the season ending WTA Tournament in Doha as top seeds and the most in form duo to end the year on a strong note.
"We are friends with Sara and Maria Jose. So we knew how to play against each other. It was not easy to surprise them, that is for sure, but we played a good match. We will have a few days to relax and enjoy the win, and then we
will practice in Doha and be ready for our first match next Saturday,” added Flavia after the title victory.
Flavia and Gisela have previously won the title in Montreal, Stuttgart, Rome, Miami and Bastad. With the exception of Bastad, the rest of them are all Premier-level competitions.
Flavia and Gisela will be joined in the season ending tournament by Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik, Rennae Stubbs and Lisa Raymond, and Yaroslava Shvedova and Vania King. The doubles clashes will start from Saturday.
Kim Clijsters, Vera Zvonareva, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki, Elena Dementieva, Francesca Schiavone, Jelena Jankovic and Samantha Stosur are the singles field along with Shahar Pe’er and Li Na as alternates.
