BIG Ten announces Nebraska Huskers as preseason favourite team – Volleyball News
The Big Ten coaches recently declared the defending Conference Champion Nebraska as the most desired team of the 2012 season. The exciting news was officially released on Thursday.
The Nebraska volleyball team, which has the official mascot of Huskers, displayed a consistent performance during the 2011 Big Ten conference play and finished as the top team of the conference. The Huskers also earned the conference's automatic berth to
the NCAA Championship in 2011. This year the Huskers are up to defend their legacy on the centre court. The team is scheduled to open the 2012 season on Saturday, August 18. Just before the start of the new season, the Big Ten coaches held a poll and selected
Nebraska Huskers as the favourite team to win the Big Ten Conference title this year. This is the first time that Nebraska women’s volleyball team has topped the poll as member of the Big Ten Conference.
In fact, the Big Ten Coaches announced a total of six teams that are likely to make their mark in the upcoming season. After the Huskers, the women’s volleyball squad of Penn State, which tied for second position in 2011, is tipped to get hold of the second
spot in 2012 Big Ten ranking. The Nittany Lions of Penn State tied with Purdue for the second slot in the previous season.
Likewise, Purdue Boilers are voted to finish third. Teams from Minnesota, Illinois and Ohio State are recommended to take the rest of the slots in the top-six ranking of Big Ten Conference. The Gophers of Minnesota ended up fifth last season, but the Big
Ten Coaches have expressed faith that the team will step up its performance in the 2012 season and take the fourth spot.
Meanwhile, the Big Ten Conference office unveiled the names of the players from different schools who are likely to make their way to the All-Big Ten Team. The coaches selected Deja McClendon of Penn State and Purdue's Ariel Turner for the second consecutive
season. Moreover, Tori Dixon and Ashley Wittman from Illinois; Nebraska's Hannah Werth and Lauren Cook; Northwestern's Stephanie Holthus and Katie Slay of Penn State are among the selected players for the Preseason All-Big Ten Team.
